La Candelaria is the heart and soul of Bogotá, with La Plaza de Bolívar as its focal point surrounded by the Cathedral, Congress, the Justice Palace and the Mayor’s Office. Visit the Gold Museum, which houses the continent’s most priceless gold masterpieces from Pre-Columbian societies; and the Museo de Botero, where renowned Colombian artist Fernando Botero displays his private art collection, including works by Picasso, Renoir, Dali, Degas, Chagall, Matisse, Monet and Giacometti. Discover the Mercado de Paloquemao, one of Bogotá’s oldest food markets, taking in the colourful sights of exotic fruits, vegetables and flowers, and stop to try freshly made juices and other local delicacies.

Day 4

Villa Vieja - San Agustin

Tour the Tatacoa Desert

Private land transfer from Villa Vieja to San Agustin for a 2 night stay. Visit the Tatacoa Desert en route. Somewhat out of place in the mountains and lush plains of the department of Huila, this area of scrub and bizarre rock formations dotted with cactus and other sparse desert vegetation sits just 50 kms from Neiva. The two mountain ranges that flank the Tatacoa desert starve it of water and therefore cause this other-worldly desert phenomenon that is the result of local micro climates and geographical conditions.

Overnight in San Agustin

Day 5

Tour of the San Agustin Archaeological Park and museum

Famed for its mysterious Pre-Columbian stone figures carved out of and into the rock, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of Colombia’s more unusual and spiritual locations. The statues date to 3300BC, and are carved to resemble the men, animals and the gods of the Pre-Columbian people. Little is known about the culture and civilisations that made and carved these statues, leaving the visitors with their own ideas and imagination about these ancient statues. From there, the tour continues to the village of Obando, descending deep into ancient underground tombs which have been carefully restored. The last visit will be to the Magdalena River Strait, which is a particularly beautiful section of the Magdalena River where the river is forced through a narrow gap.

Overnight in San Agustin
